On the mindless Menace of Violence

　1968年4月5日、クリーブランドのCity Club of Cleveland でされた「心無き暴力の脅威について」(直訳）というRFKのスピーチに映像が残っていたとは！

　この演説は、エミリオ・エステベス監督の映画Bobbyの最後の部分で使われて、それなりに有名になったのではないかと思いますが、この演説をまさにしているボビーが見られようとは。感涙です。

　てっきり、映像はなく録音だけだと今日まで信じてました。

　というわけで、演説のごく一部分だけですが、感動の映像がここに。
　
　RFKがいかに真剣にこの演説をしているかは、声だけ聴いても伝わってきますが、表情を見ると、なおさら心が動かされます。

　これをYou Tube に投稿してくださったアメリカ人の方、本当に感謝です！

　RFKが語っている演説部分を下に示します。

　…violence breeds violence, repression brings retaliation, and only a cleansing of our whole society can remove this sickness from our soul.

　　For there is another kind of violence, slower but just as deadly destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions; indifference and inaction and slow decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. This is the slow destruction of a child by hunger, and schools without books and homes without heat in the winter.

　　This is the breaking of a man's spirit by denying him the chance to stand as a father and as a man among other men.

　But we can perhaps remember, if only for a time, that those who live with us are our brothers,　

（中略）

　…and surely we can begin to work a little harder to bind up the wounds among us and to become in our own hearts brothers and countrymen once again.

　演説のところどころをつなぎ合わせているということは、全部が録画されたビデオがどこかに存在しているということでしょうか。

　「デモクラシーナウ!」の二人のように、RFKの活動のごく一部を取り出して、非難しても仕方がない、彼の全体を見ていろいろなことを判断しなければとこの映像を観ながら、改めて考えました。

　一人の人を判断するのは容易ではないです。その人の生涯の中での文脈、位置づけを考えないといけない。

　RFK以外の人に対しても、判断を下すときは慎重に敬意をもってしたいものです。

　…ということは、まずJFKとエドワード・ケネディへの評価から見直さないとな〜、私の場合。

　

　なんとなく、背後の光が十字架ぽくて、勝手に思い入れがある写真。

　そういう思い入れはボビーにとってはいい迷惑でしょうと思いつつ。
